Why Do Couples Look Like Each Other?

While you could possibly be familiar with the old saying, “opposites attract,” in truth, what the heart wants is somebody who looks like its owner – and that resemblance improves the longer two lovebirds stay with each other. University of Michigan psychologist "Robert Zajonc" performed an experiment to test this phenomenon. He reviewed photographs of couples obtained when they were newlyweds and photographs of the same couples taken 25years later on. The effects showed that the couples had grown to look much like each other more than time. the more happy that the couple said they were, the more likely they were to have improved in their physical likeness.

Robert Zajonc" indicated that older couples looked more alike because people in close contact mimic each other’s facial expression. In other words, if your partner has a good sense of humor and laughs a lot, he or she will most likely develop laugh lines about their mouth.

Other facts have also shown that men and women may be originally attracted to partners with similar personas. In 2006, researchers at the University of Liverpool say individuals in a study to view particular person photos of men & women and decide their personalities. The participants did not know who in the photos was married to whom, but the married couples that had been together the longest were judged to have more similar personalities. The scientists determined that, “possessing personality traits that are
attractive may be causal in creating a face attractive.”

It changes, we may even be hard-wired to "fall in love" with people sporting DNA that is similar to our own in some strategies. In a study of twins, University of Western Ontario scientists found that not only did the study participants tend to pick partners with similar genes, the partners of the identical twins were also more similar than the spouses of nonidentical twins.

"Partners may start to look like each other because in some ways they already are like each other"
